Westport Stormwater Progress Update

While Kansas City welcomed visitors for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, construction on the Westport Stormwater Improvements project paused during June 2026. Work resumed in July after tournament activities concluded. Read on and explore the graphic and video below to see the project's progress from groundbreaking to today.

Progress to Date

Since construction began in April 2025, significant work has been completed across the Mill Street Corridor:

  • Stormwater infrastructure

    • Installed two underground storage basins (at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park and the Mill Street Station/Sun Fresh parking lot)

    • Completed major water and stormwater system upgrades along Mill Street and 40th Street

    • These improvements will provide 3.5 million gallons of stormwater storage capacity to help reduce frequent flooding

  • Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park

    • New walking paths, stairs, and sidewalks

    • Site prepared for a future public art feature

  • Westport Rd. & Mill St. intersection

    • New sidewalks, ADA crossings, curbs, and bump-outs

    • Raised intersection for traffic calming

    • Streetscape upgrades including new lighting and street trees

    • Permeable paver parking stalls

  • Mill Street Station / Sun Fresh parking lot

    • Completed underground storage basin

    • New paving, striping, and landscaped medians

  • Corridor-wide improvements

    • Sidewalk, curb, and driveway upgrades

    • New pedestrian and street lighting

    • Landscaping and streetscape enhancements
