About the Westport Stormwater Improvements Project
To address severe flooding in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kansas City, Missouri, KC Water initiated the $30 million Westport Stormwater Improvements Project. The progressive design-build effort will add 3.5 million gallons of underground stormwater storage, a new dedicated storm sewer and roadside green infrastructure to mitigate property damage on Mill Street between the Mill Street Shops parking lot and Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park. In addition to stormwater management, the project includes replacing century-old waterlines, upgrading streetscapes for pedestrian safety and adding native landscaping to Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park.

Tuesday, May 27: Walking Tour
Construction on the Westport Stormwater Improvements project will pause during the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ festivities in Kansas City. Crews will return later this summer to continue wrapping up stormwater and streetscape improvements, with major construction activities wrapping up by the end of the calendar year.
KC Water and Design-Builder Burns & McDonnell hosted a guided walking tour of the Westport Stormwater Improvements project on Tuesday, May 26, for community members to get a first-hand look at progress in the Westport district since the project first broke ground in April 2025.
The tour started at the southern end of Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park near the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and 43rd Street. The group walked northwest along the project corridor. The tour ended at Chambre Coffee for a Stormwater Social event to network with the project team, answer questions about the project, and support a local business.
