Site Progress

Since breaking ground in late April, the Westport Stormwater Improvements project progressed from initial site mobilization to advanced excavation and soil stabilization. Crews began clearing the site, relocating underground utilities, and installing safety fencing and support systems to prepare for deep excavation at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park. By mid-May, crews began using drill augering to install structural support beams reaching depths of up to 22 feet.  Temporary fencing, traffic control measures, and increased haul truck activity were implemented to ensure safety and maintain access.

In early June, the excavation reached deeper levels, and a large drill rig was brought in to continue stabilizing the soil. Shoring system installation continued, and dirt and debris were removed from the site.

Mill Street remains closed between Wornall Road and Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park, for intermittent utility work and street surfacing repairs.  The next major phase is the installation of the underground detention structures.

Before construction broke ground, the project team surveyed the site and took these pre-construction photos of Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park.

City leaders, project management, business leaders and community members celebrated the groundbreaking of the Westport Stormwater Improvements project on Thursday, April 24 at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park. Councilmember Eric Bunch, Councilmember Crispin Rea, Marshaun Butler, Chief Operating Officer of St. Luke’s, and Kenneth Morgan, Water Services Director at KC Water made remarks. Businesses in the Westport area, including Broadway Roasting Co. and Donutology, provided refreshments.

Crews cleared the construction site at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park and Mill Street. In addition to stormwater improvements, the project will modernize Mill Street with green infrastructure features that better manage runoff while creating safer, more accessible spaces for pedestrians and vehicles. Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park will also undergo landscape enhancements, including a new pedestrian path into the Westport entertainment district, increased accessibility, additional public space, and native tree plantings. Dedicated areas have been reserved for future park upgrades.

Excavation continues at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park! Steel beams are installed 22 feet below the surface for a temporary shoring system and to stabilize the soil during excavation. The park will hold one of two storage basins on the project to help manage stormwater runoff in Westport.
